About Me
Meryl Zachariah
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, I grew up passionate about art. Anytime I had free time, I was teaching myself how to draw something new. Over time, my passion for art became an integral part of my identity. My parents were incredibly supportive, providing me with a safe and creative environment. This support began when my Kindergarten art teacher recognized my potential after I won a little red ribbon at the Houston Livestock Rodeo Art Show.
I dabbled in activities like teaching art at VBS in Church, thanks to some memorable art teachers who helped me thrive by giving me extra attention. Mr. Pardo, my elementary art teacher, encouraged my parents to enroll me in the ages 10-12 drawing competition at the Houston Junior Glassell Art School, which led to scholarships there. In high school, Ms. Mendoza gave me her personal Prismacolors discreetly because the school brand colors were holding me back, and she was disappointed that I never took AP Studio Art. At Houston Community College, Professor Justin Varner expedited my skills through his amazing courses, which I doubled up on before the pandemic tragically interrupted my progress.
In college, I began doing portraits for commission, which led to requests for custom artwork on shoes and leather jackets. Around the same time, I started freelancing makeup in 2017, inspired by women who saw me paint my face. Additionally, parents began asking me to teach their kids art, which was a niche opportunity that complemented my rising job as an after-school site coordinator for about 200 kids and my volunteer work with Texas Children's and RMH family activities programs. I will never forget these first few people who believe in me so much to even lead me to considering the foundation of MZ Artistry.
As my opportunities progressed, for the past two summers, I have been teaching elementary kids art in a classroom setting for FBISD, covering various mediums such as sculpture, drawing, pastels, acrylic painting, and watercolors. This experience has been an absolute dream come true. With my background in psychology and biology from UH, combined with a romanticized lens on life, I see art in everything.
My ultimate goal is to spread the passion for art and the philosophy that there is art in everything. I strive to leave an artistic impact on children, who are the future of the world, and hope to be the person for them that my mentors were for me. Though I still have a long way to go, I am honored by the opportunities and kindness I have received thus far and look forward to where art may drive me next.
